A Digital Library for the Pancyprian Gymnasium
The Science and Technology in Archaeology and Cultural Heritage Research Center (STARC) of The Cyprus Institute (CyI) has begun a close collaboration with the Pancyprian Gymnasium in Nicosia to create a digital archive and library of the historic school’s archives and collections. The collaboration agreement was signed by the Minister of Education and Culture, Dr. Costas Kadis, the President of The Cyprus Institute, Prof. Costas Papanicolas, and the President of the Ephorate of the Greek Schools of Nicosia, Nikos Megalemos
Contributing in this important collaborative effort, DIOPTRA, the Imaging Cluster for Archaeology and Cultural Heritage (ICACH) and the Art Characterization project will provide support and expertise in the digitization, study and dissemination of the invaluable archives and museum collections of the historic school. These archives and collections concern an array of historic materials ranging from codeces, archives and photographs to works of art and archaeological artefacts. Working closely with experts and teachers from the Pancyprian Gymnasium, STARC researchers and specialists will guide the development of a digital library for the Pancyprian Gymnasium. In this effort, Dioptra: The Edmée Leventis Digital Library for Cypriot Culture of The Cyprus Institute will provide the optimal digital platform for the development and dissemination of the results of this collaborative project.
The aforementioned initiative highlights STARC’s mission is the development and effective application of scientific and technological methods and tools in archaeological and cultural heritage research in Cyprus and the broader Eastern Mediterranean basin. Advances in the fields of Digital Heritage and Digital Humanities offer tremendous opportunities for the documentation, study and preservation of our cultural heritage.
